PREPARATIONS & RECOMMANDATIONS

WATER

WATER

It is recommended to stay well hydrated throughout  the day and specifically during the time of a  fast in anticipation of a blood test.  Good hydration also facilitates collection.

Please note:   The hydration mentioned above means drinking ONLY WATER.

ALCOHOL

ALCOHOL

As a general rule, it is recommended not to consume alcohol at  least 48 to 72 hours before a blood test, as this may change the results of some tests.  Obviously, if it is indicated that you must have an empty stomach for your blood test, it is essential to follow the instructions not to consume alcohol.

Please note:  It is highly recommended to discuss with your doctor if it is necessary for you to avoid alcohol intake and to follow these recommendations for this purpose.

MEDICATION

MEDICATION

We recommend that you take your medication as prescribed by your doctor.  Unless otherwise specified.  However, taking it on an empty stomach can sometimes cause stomach pain, or irritation to the stomach, in which case you can wait and take it with food to make the absorption more pleasant  Get informed

FASTING

FASTING

You should know that recent food intake can temporarily modify the results of certain biochemical analyses.  Very often it is on the rise, such as GLUCOSE, TRIGLYCERIDES, IRON etc.  And sometimes it’s down, like PHOSPHORUS.

In addition, the presence of chylomicrons (fat in suspension in the blood) gives a cloudy appearance to the blood and this can disrupt certain dosage techniques.  This is why the laboratories have decided to establish universal fasting conditions, so that the results are not distorted.

SMOKING

SMOKING

As a general rule, it is recommended, if you must be on an empty stomach, not to smoke throughout the fasting procedure.  Otherwise, it is best to avoid smoking the morning of your appointment.

Please note:  When a smoker is fasting, in addition to having an empty stomach, tobacco will increase acidity.  Cigarette smoke can increase the number of white blood cells and raises blood sugar and certain parameters can be affected.  Get informed
